AUSTIN — New rules meant to improve safety target young drivers in Texas go into effect today.

The Department of Public Safety says, as of today, applicants between the ages of 18 and 24 must complete an approved driver education course and a driving skills test to get a license.

DPS says applicants also must submit a certificate proving that they successfully completed a driver education course approved by the Texas Education Agency.

Applicants with such proof will not be required to submit to the written highway signs and traffic laws test, but still need to pass the driving skills part.

A driving safety course or drug and alcohol driving awareness program are not acceptable as driver education courses.

The changes were approved by the 2009 Legislature.

  • Texas offers $1.4 million to woo Facebook satellite office

The state of Texas is offering Facebook Inc. $1.4 million from a business development fund to locate a new 200-employee sales and operations office in Austin.

The deal, announced Thursday by Gov. Rick Perry's office, is contingent on the City of Austin chipping in about $200,000 in economic development incentives to Facebook.

Austin is one of several cities Facebook is considering for the office, which would be the social networking giant's first major office expansion outside of its headquarters in Palo Alto. Facebook has not revealed other cities in the running, but noted Austin offers a deep pool of technology workers.

The office would house sales support and customer service staff and risk management personnel, according to documents filed with the city of Austin. Facebook plans to add staff, with an average annual salary of $54,000, incrementally through 2014.

The company hasn't picked a location, but proposed leasing 20,000-square-feet of space in the first year and expand to up to 40,000-square-feet in the second or third year. The plan also includes about $3.1 million in capital improvements.

A press release from Perry announced financing would come through the Texas Enterprise Fund, which is used to attract businesses.

The Austin City Council will meet next week to formally hear a proposal to offer Facebook an estimated $200,000 in economic development incentives. A public hearing is scheduled for March 11.

Facebook, which has seen membership grow to more than 400 million worldwide, has also broken ground on a new data center in central Oregon that will employ 35 new workers.

  • Local Talent mingles with Rock and Roll Greats

    February 2, 2010

Our local pianist, Randy Dennis, recently had the opportunity to mingle with some Rock and Roll Greats at the Bob Hope Golf Tournament in Palm Springs, California.

Randy Dennis, a local piano player and teacher, recently interacted with international rock stars Alice Cooper and lead guitarist for the legendary rock band "The Doors," Robby Krieger.  Dennis was playing keyboard at the annual Bob Hope Classic Golf Tournament held in Palm Springs, California with his Austin band, Duck Soup.

“It was an exciting moment to get to meet these music celebrities,” states Dennis, “and I felt compelled to play my best on keyboard for the event.” The band was subsequently asked to play in next year’s tournament.

  • HIGHLANDS BOULEVARD FINALLY SET TO OPEN
    JANUARY 30, 2010

    Sunday, January 24, 2010

Temporary digital signage placed on Bee Creek Road announces the opening of Highlands Boulevard linking Spicewood to Lakeway.  The long awaited boulevard with its recently completed landscaping and signage still has locked gates at the connection on Bee Creek Road, but soon these gates will open and give Spicewood residents the long awaited access to The Hills, Lakeway Swim Center, City of Lakeway and access to Serene Hills and some would argue a short cut to Lake Travis High School and Lake Travis Middle School.

"It will be interesting to see just how much of a short cut it will be," stated one Spicewood resident.  With a low speed limit and the predictibly high enforcement of Lakeway Police on this new stretch of road, speeders beware.  Traffic laws will be strictly enforced.

"My family lives near Lakeway City Park and right now going 71 to 620 it takes 20 minutes or more.  The new road will mean about a 10-12 minute drive." Kristie Hagar reported excitedly.  "And when the kids start swimming again this Spring - it will be a five minute drive instead of 25.  I can't wait!"

Local business owners are hoping for a boom, too.  A New Day Child Care Center on Bee Creek Road near the newly created connection will now be able to pull families from The Highlands, Serene Hills and Rough Hollow to their state of the art child development center.

Lakeway residents can now get to the infamous Poodies Hilltop "It's great for the community to be linked together instead of being separated.  Now friends and families who have always been linked by water can have roads to make socializing easier."

  • Houston attacker found after 19 years

    October 13, 2009

(CNN) -- A suspect has been arrested in the 1990 abduction and attempted murder of an 8-year-old Texas girl, a spokeswoman for the FBI's Houston, Texas, office said.

Jennifer Schuett speaks at a news conference, urging other victims of violent crime to use their voices.

Jennifer Schuett speaks at a news conference, urging other victims of violent crime to use their voices.

The victim, Jennifer Schuett, is now 27. She recently shared her story with CNN in hopes of someday bringing her attacker to justice.

Schuett fought tears as she spoke at a news conference in Dickinson, Texas.

"This event in my life was a tragic one," she said. "But today, 19 years later, I stand here and want you all to know that I am OK. I am not a victim, but instead, victorious."

She continued, "I hope that my case will remain as a reminder to all victims of violent crime to never give up hope ... With determination and by using your voice to speak out, you are capable of anything."

Dennis Earl Bradford, a 40-year-old welder, was arrested at 6:50 a.m. Tuesday in Little Rock, Arkansas, authorities said. He was on his way to work, and his wife was in the car with him.

DNA and other forensic testing led to him, authorities said. His DNA profile was in the FBI database due to a 1996 arrest in Arkansas.

    Junior Cotillion Teaches
    Sometimes Missing Life Skills

    September 30, 2009
The National League of Junior Cotillions is a one of a kind experience.  Luke, my 13 year old son, reports it’s the best experience of his life and that he’s never been so close to that many beautiful girls in his life.  From the mouth of a tween, it is even more bittersweet to hear his tales of gracious lessons of life's rules.  These are not rules that most take the time to teach his or her child anymore.  An adult without these skills is destined to be pigeonholed by mistakes that could have been avoided. Etiquette may seem superficial and somewhat pretentious to some but everyone notices when manners are missing completely.   Keeping the kids busy by offering gift cards to their favorite shops to hold their attention is geniusly working with what you’ve been given and its working, I might add.  Luke has never been behaved better.  This season culminates with a dinner and dance at Lakeway Resort.  Visit  http://www.nljc.com/ for more info.
