Stress Management Tips for New School Year
Spicewood, Texas – With another school year start upon us, many Lake Travis ISD parents may begin to feel the stress of the routine change and pressures of student expectations. Concentration is disrupted with the change too. When people have many tasks to accomplish in one day, including purchasing school supplies, buying new clothes and shoes and organizing carpools and student schedules, in addition to the daily job and household upkeep, it can become overwhelming. Psychology experts recommend that people identify what is wrecking their concentration and then address it. Susan Rhodes, LCSW and counselor, offers a few tips to assist parents, and all Lake Travis residents to staying focused and managing stress during this time of year.
Multi-task only with uncomplicated projects. It’s okay to talk on the phone while washing dishes or folding laundry, but not while answering a work email or filling out your child’s recreational forms. Studies show that you can get a lot more done, more quickly, when you can stay focused on one function at a time.
Reward yourself. Offer yourself small rewards and schedule a break when you complete tasks. It makes it a lot easier to stay motivated through a boring or unexciting duty such as completing multiple registration documents or working on an accounting project. Having coffee, soda, reading a book chapter or a short walk as a goal will get you through the event.
Avoid mental distraction. Distracting thoughts can sometimes interrupt the thinking process when we try to focus on a particular issue. When a concern does not seem to leave you alone, write down what you are thinking about and address it later when you do not have other jobs to complete.
Plan your electronic time. With new smart phones and effortless email access, it’s so easy to become sidetracked. When you’re concentrating on your child and getting them into a new schedule, or working on a complicated project, prioritize the child and the project. Schedule your email time and don’t let it interrupt your planned to-do list.
Stay rested. Adults need 7-10 hours of sleep per night, and that rest will go a long way to helping you stay focused and upbeat.
Learning how to prioritize and stay focused is a valuable tool for managing stress and keeping up with daily events. By following the above tips, you can live a much more successful lifestyle – at the beginning of school and throughout the year.
Susan Rhodes is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with her own office, Spicewood Counseling, where she has assisted patients for the past two years. In her ten years of counseling, her clients have included children, teens, adults, seniors and couples on issues such as depression, anxiety, stress management, grief and relationships. LAKE TRAVIS HIGH SCHOOL
Teenager charged over photos
A 17-year-old Lake Travis High School student has been charged with improper photography after nearly 150 close-up photos of females' bodies were found on his cell phone, according to an arrest affidavit filed Monday .
All 39 females were clothed in the photos, but they appeared to be taken without their consent, the affidavit says.
Anthony Marco Gigliotti was reported Jan. 6 when a student saw him photograph a girl from behind during class, the document says.
According to an affidavit, Gigliotti told an assistant principal that he took the photos because sex education was lacking at the school.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 17, 2010
Lake Travis football coach Chad Morris headed to collegiate ranks at the University of Tulsa
February Update: Coach Hank Carter has been named the new Head Coach for Lake Travis High School. Coach Carter has been the interim Head Coach since Coach Chad Morris announced his departure. Congratulations to Coach Carter on providing the leadership LTHS needs to continue its success.
Assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Hank Carter named interim head coach Chad Morris, head football coach/athletic coordinator at Lake Travis High School, is taking the next big step in a remarkable high school coaching career. Morris, who came to Lake Travis following the school’s 2007 4A state championship and guided the Cavaliers to back-to-back state championships in 2008 and 2009, has accepted the position of Offensive Coordinator at the University of Tulsa. Lake Travis assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Henry ‘Hank’ Jason Carter will serve as interim head coach.
During his high school football coaching career, Morris has amassed a record of 162 wins and 25 losses, including a perfect 32-0 while at Lake Travis. He has coached in six state championship games during his career, capturing three state titles (Bay City 2000 and Lake Travis 2008, 2009). Lake Travis currently holds the state’s longest current winning streak—46 games—and finished ranked number two in the nation in the Rivals.com high school football poll.
“I have been tremendously blessed to have worked and enjoyed success in some wonderful school districts,” said Morris. “The Lake Travis experience represents the pinnacle of my high school coaching career, and words cannot express how much I will miss the players, district staff, parents, colleagues and community members who have been instrumental in building the program into what it is today. The opportunity to move to the college ranks as an offensive coordinator is simply an opportunity that I felt I should pursue.”
According to Lake Travis Independent School District (LTISD) Superintendent Dr. Rocky Kirk, Morris’ decision to move to the college football level was not totally unexpected, given Morris’ talent and success. “Chad Morris represents the very best of what coaches can and should be. First and foremost, he is an exceptional father, husband, and son whose priorities and values reflect integrity, a tremendous work ethic, and a commitment to winning with class and distinction. Coach Morris has distinguished himself in so many ways during his coaching career, and at Lake Travis, he has faithfully demonstrated how to work with students in a manner that respects them as individuals, while expecting the very best of each of them on and off the field. If you spend any time at all with Chad, the thing you come to appreciate is that he is a tremendous leader with a humble spirit. Although he has enjoyed unprecedented success at Lake Travis, he has never been demanding or interested in calling attention to himself. That is a tremendous testament to who he is. We won’t attempt to replace Chad Morris. Rather, we will build on his contributions to our district and the accomplishments we have been fortunate to share with him.”
Morris and his wife Paula, a fourth-grade teacher at Serene Hills Elementary School in LTISD, have been married 16 years. They have two children: Mackenzie, 13 and Chandler, 9, seventh and second graders, respectively.

Construction is everywhere. Whether you find yourself on Highway 71 or on a neighborhood thoroughfare like Bee Creek Road, you cannot escape the construction scene right now. Add to this the new roads set to open in the coming months and year such as Highland Boulevard, Serene Hills Drive and Pedernales Summit Parkway and it’s easy to see why we feel more like ants in a new maze then the seasoned commuters we are living in this neck of the ever growingly shrinking woods.
In spite of early year stunted home sales and a summer further slowed by the lack of water in Lake Travis, projects stagnant by the likewise economy are now meandering toward completion. Serene Hills, Rough Hollow, Sweetwater and Highlands Lakeway are prime examples. Other new neighborhoods such as Bee Creek Estates, Windy Walk and Willie's Tierra Vista are all feeling the pinch, too.
Nationally, home sales are up slightly for the second month in a row. The housing patient has now survived the heart attack and is learning to live on a new diet of hard to qualify mortgages and restrictive banking guidelines.
Regardless, along with the new neigborhoods, no matter how slow in arriving now are new roads. Bee Creek Road is seeing some changes with the new connection to Highlands Boulevard, the main thoroughfare for Highlands Lakeway, Rough Hollow, The Hills and Lakeway Swim Center. Residents from Travis Settlement to Siesta Shores are weighing in on how the new roads will affect their daily lives.
“Being able to take Highlands Boulevard to Lakeway Swim Center will cut 20 minutes off my drive time for the kids swim team workouts. I can’t wait.” says one mom from Big Bee Creek subdivision near RO and Bee Creek Road. “As the crow flies, I’m about five minutes away instead of 25. What a blessing! I feel like sending Mr. Dawlett a Thank You card. I promise not to speed, I just want the access.” she swears holding up her three finger scouts honor.
Another option to access Lakeway will soon be Serene Hills Road which is now constructed from Flintrock Road through to Highway 71. Gated right now, the street signs are up and the area appears to be near completion. Just down 71, Sweetwater with its newly constructed Pedernales Summit Parkway entrance also appears to be complete, though not expected to draw the immediate traffic.
A resident who asked not to be named off of Lakehurst said, “It is just going to bring more traffic to our area. Then after the traffic comes the by laws, deed restrictions and police department. Everyone out here minds their own business while they are busy minding everyone elses.” He has seen some changes in his twenty years of Bee Creek area residency. “A road to Lakeway is the last straw, I need to move out farther.”
